My comment is about the photo of Nick Clarke emblazoned on the front of the Cambridge News indicating how much he was paid as Leader of the Council on the morning of the Election. As it was minus any indication of the amounts collected by other councillors in council, district and parish, I considered it extremely inappropriate and verging on the criminal, inasmuch as they appeared to be trying to say the vast amounts being wasted by Cambridgeshire County Council was down to one person. The fact the councillors are able to gain large pensioners from their “voluntary” work is disgraceful, but this article was unacceptable in every way and there should be a complaint made.

Thanks for the link. As I say in the article, a Lib Dem wipeout is only one of a range of possible outcomes – I think they are still in with a chance in up to eight of the 14 seats in Cambridge.

Strong piece. I was just a kid in the late Seventies, but I remember clearly what that gloomy time was like.

Luckily – I was a teenager in the Eighties. Back then, a teenager could leave school and get a job quite easily – even changing it for another if it didn’t suit.

I worked at the crack of dawn on a market setting up stalls, stacking shelves in a supermarket, “martialling” at a roller-skating disco and even cleaning loos for a large company to earn a few bucks to take my girlfriend out at the weekend and buy books and records.

You could walk to the door of a company and say: “Got any jobs?” and they’d say: “Start tomorrow?” Sure, the pay wasn’t going to make me rich, but I wasn’t exactly loaded with employable skills myself back then. Good luck being a young person trying to get those sort of starting jobs now. Mostly gone.

I agree Steve. What we are witnessing is ideology over reality. In other times, when money was freely available, people could be subdued by fluffy thinking as the cost would not affect them.

These days everyone I speak to wants a hard nosed business approach to running the council. They want decisive behaviour based on common sense with positive outcomes. The choice between fluffy and services people need is easy when money is short. Need wins out every time.

I hope they run a Lib Dem candidate in my division with their line about wind farms. But if they’re going to knock on doors they should wear the solar panels as body armour : )

Funnily enough, rumour has it that they are so unpopular here that they cannot actual stand candidates in every seat! They might have to “endorse” people who have previously been quite open about their dislike of Liberal Democrats!

Lib Dems might be hanging on in the city,just – but in Fenland they’re in disarray. They just got caned in a by-election seat in their strongest area and their another candidate appeared to be telling the world that anybody who was a student or worked part-time was second-class and should get a “proper job.”
